Bonding them to the front surfaces of your teeth allows you to enjoy noticeable improvement using a minimally invasive procedure. Although the front sides of your teeth will be covered by restorations, that doesn’t mean you can stop brushing. You are still at risk of tooth decay, which can cause your veneers to fail. Here’s what you need to know to safeguard your smile from cavities.

Tooth Decay is Possible with Veneers

A veneer only covers the front surface of your tooth, leaving the backside exposed to bacteria that can erode your enamel. Any exposed tooth surface is vulnerable to cavities.

Tooth decay can also occur underneath your veneers. Cracks can form in the dental cement holding your restorations in place over time, which is normal. However, bacteria can gain access to your tooth through the small cracks if you don’t practice good oral hygiene. The cavity can remain hidden underneath your veneer until it turns into a dental emergency, like a tooth infection.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay

92% of adults will experience tooth decay at some point during their life. You can significantly lower your risk of cavities and ensure your veneers last for a decade or longer by following a few tips:

  • Brush and Floss: Commit to brushing your teeth at least twice a day, if not after every meal. Do not use abrasive dental products because they can scratch your veneers, damaging them and causing them to look discolored. Instead, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to clean your teeth for 2 minutes. Finish your oral hygiene routine by flossing your teeth every day.
  • Limit Sugars and Starches: Limit your consumption of sugars and starches, which feed cavity-causing bacteria. If you can’t resist your sweet tooth, brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with water to remove sugary residue.
  • Visit Your Dentist: The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. Your dentist will monitor your oral health to detect anything concerning. While it is still small, like areas of enamel loss. They can provide the quick intervention you need to stop a minor issue from turning into a big problem. In addition, they can provide various preventive treatments to lessen your risk of cavities, like fluoride varnish or dental sealants. They will also check your veneers at each appointment to ensure they are undamaged and functioning as intended.

Veneers offer priceless benefits that can last for 10 years or more. A cavity-free smile is essential for getting the most from your investment.
