Veneers are a beautiful, durable solution to multiple oral health issues such as stained, chipped, “too small”, and even gapped teeth. Because they are made from a strong, natural-looking porcelain, they can withstand plenty of pressure from chewing and biting. But in some rare instances, they can come loose, fall off, or break. If yours does, don’t panic. Here’s what you should do to protect your teeth and get your gorgeous grin back!
Help! My Veneer Fell Off!
Picture this. You’re enjoying your lunch and suddenly something extra is moving around in your mouth. You bite down, and it feels like you may have broken a tooth. After checking in a mirror, you realize it’s not your tooth but your veneer. But now what? First, gather any pieces and put them somewhere safe like a resealable bag or a small container. If it is still in one piece, it may be able to be reattached. If it is broken, there is still a possibility it can be repaired, however, your dentist will need to make that determination.
Next, call your dentist and make an appointment to have the tooth and veneer assessed. If it’s reusable, your dentist can reattach it at your appointment, or if not, they can order you a replacement.
In the meantime, be sure to take good care of your tooth. Because there was a thin layer of enamel removed when it was attached, you may experience some sensitivity to hot and cold foods until you have it replaced, however it is in no immediate danger. If you do experience any sensitivity, you can also surround the tooth with dental wax to protect it, but do not under any circumstances try to reattach it or repair it yourself!
Why Do Veneers Fall Off?
Usually, newer veneers fall off by no fault of the patient’s own. Sometimes, they are not cemented well or enough. Older veneers, however, can come loose for many reasons, including tooth decay, age, or even neglecting to take care of your oral hygiene properly. This is why it is so important to brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day to maintain your tooth and gum health. Furthermore, it is also important to visit your dentist twice a year for your regular, semi-annual checkups and cleanings. This will give them an opportunity to make sure your veneers are in great shape so that they don’t surprise you by falling off!
Remember, veneers don’t come out often, but they do occasionally. The important thing to remember if it does is to not panic, and to act quickly to protect both your tooth and the veneer.
